The Marshal of the Central Altar is also known as “Prince Marshal,” and colloquially as “Lord Prince,” or “Prince Nezha.” According to legend, Prince Nezha is the Daluo saint and divine general leading the charge for the Jade Emperor. He commands the five heavenly battalions in the north, south, east, west, and center, and hence is referred to as “Marshal of the Central Altar,” “Divine General of the Central Battalion,” or “Great General of the Central Battalion. The Marshal of the Central Altar is worshipped as the chief protector of Taoism, and possesses a high level of Taoist method and power.
