A Ceremony for Heaven to Supplement Good Fortune
The 6th day of the 6th lunar month in the ancient calendar was the “Heaven’s Ceremony Festival.” According to legend, the Book of Heaven will descend from heaven, and the gates of heaven will open. The faithful will arrive at the Heavenly Lord Temple to pray for blessings and good fortune for themselves and their families. Rice cakes will be prepared with the shells of five dried longan (five blessings and ten degrees of completion) the one at the center is for the self, those surrounding represent family members. There would also be a hardboiled egg. After the blessing ceremony, the egg will be smashed against the forehead representing the crushing of bad luck. The egg shell will then be removed to represent shedding of the shell, and the egg will be taken out to represent the removal of bad fortune. The egg is white, representing purity of the self. The eating of the egg signifies a new beginning. The shell and the list of names on the rice cake can be burned along with joss paper to send away bad fortune. After the ceremony is completed, there would be ashes from the Taoist ceremony on the rice cakes. These should be taken home to be eaten by the family to represent completion and harmony.
The temple will invite the Taoist priest to distribute the “Wealth Gathering Talisman” to the faithful. These talismans should be passed over the burning incense. These can be carried on the person or taped to a safe or at a place of business. On the morning of the following day (the 7th of the 6th lunar month), a ceremony to supplement good fortune and to open the gates of heaven. The faithful can bring their clothes and their family’s clothing to the temple – either held aloft in their hands or tied to their waist when they jump over the censer and allow the Taoist master to pray for blessings and good fortune for themselves and their families. To prevent over-crowding, guides will direct attendees to line up in an orderly manner.
