The National Palace Museum has become a popular destination for tourists from mainland China and abroad in recent years, with throngs of crowds in the main galleries, so visitors must wait in long lines for a glimpse of the millennia old national treasures. 

It will be welcome news to learn that in order to cater to the broader audience who are interested in the preservation of these precious cultural assets, the NPM has been actively planning exhibitions outside the walls of the NPM since 2011. By combining the digital collection and new media in interactive installations, more citizens will have opportunities to appreciate these ancient historical treasures and enjoy an elegant exhibition tour.

Painting Animation: Up the River During Qingming
Since 2011, the National Palace Museum has produced six series of high-resolution long scroll painting animations, including “Up the River During Qingming” using the latest technology and several high-resolution 1080 HD projectors to seamlessly unfold sceneries from classical long scroll paintings onto a wall, enabling the visitor to be immersed in an technologically enhanced pictorial scene that measures over 8 meters long, to fully experience the artistic conception of long scroll Chinese paintings. 

Museum without Walls Series, combining technology and the perfect presentation of artifacts
The Museum without Walls Series at the NPM has toured on exhibit in several cities throughout Taiwan. By integrating cutting-edge technology and artifact, these reinterpret the treasures of the NPM and give the collection a new look, enabling those who cannot visit the museum in person to appreciate the NPM’s artifacts at an intimate distance. 

The exhibition has arrived at the Songshan Feng Tian Temple, combining the atmosphere of a traditional temple with an arts and cultural exhibition space. These include a fascinating digital version of the painting “Up the River During Qingming” is presented by integrating new media technology with artifacts, an interactive installation inspired by the blue and white doucai porcelain in the NPM’s collection, a 3D view of “Departure Herald and Return Clearing” as well as selected reproduction from the museum’s collection and the widely acclaimed Adventures in the NPM animation series.

“New Waves of NPM Songshan Feng-Tian Temple Travelling Exhibition” departs from the limitations of the exhibition arena to enrich the five senses through vivid animation and interactive installations. The collision and dialog between “technology” and “aesthetics” bring out a new perspective on the National Palace Museum. 

Appreciation, interaction, and experience
The exhibition will include “Painting Animation: Up the River During Qingming,” “Adventures in the NPM,” 11 paintings from the digital archives, 3 master works of calligraphy, two blue and white doucai artifacts, a blue and white doucai interactive installation, and two family interaction areas. The rich and exciting exhibition content is well worth a visit to Songshan Feng Tian Temple to appreciate the ancient classical beauty of the national treasures as well as to experience the culture of traditional temples.
